Polda Jabar Reveals Cases of Counterfeiting Tomato Seeds

Indonesian Police – Bandung – Polda Jabar succeeded in dismantling the alleged crime of counterfeiting the Servo brand, a trademark for tomato seeds belonging to seed producer PT East West Seed Indonesia (Cap Arrow Merah).

The criminal act of violating the brand is considered very detrimental to the good name of PT East West Seed Indonesia (Ewindo) as a seed producer dedicated to providing quality horticultural seeds to farmers for more than 30 years.

The circulation of fake Servo branded seeds is also very disturbing for farmers, which could cost farmers up to Rp 600 billion if this happened throughout Indonesia. The perpetrators of these crimes are said to have been carried out by a group of individuals operating from Rancaekek and Ciparay sub-districts, Bandung regency, West Java.

Perpetrators use social media and markets to operate, leaving farmers as victims not only in West Java, but also in cities in Indonesia.

“The reported party was charged with Article 100 of the Law on Trademarks and Geographical Indications with a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison,” said Head of Unit 4 Sub-Directorate 1 of the West Java Police Ditreskrimsus, Kompol Maradona Armin Mapaseng, Monday (30/5).

The success of the police in dismantling criminal acts that greatly harmed farmers and threatened the national food security program stemmed from a complaint by Mustari, a farmer in Makassar, South Sulawesi, in April 2021 to PT Ewindo.

Farmers who were victims of this scam initially asked the perpetrators for chili seeds via the Facebook Messenger application online with the Aliz Benih UD account aka UD BENIH aka ALZIZ UD.

Mustari then paid by transfer to the perpetrator who provided the account number in the name of Deden Rohimat. After the goods were sent and received by the victim’s farmer, it turned out that the goods sent did not match the victim’s order. Because the seeds sent were not chili seeds but fake Tomato Seeds using the Servo brand belonging to PT Ewindo or Cap Panah Merah.

Because the victim farmer was suspicious of the authenticity of the Servo Tomato Seed packaging, the victim farmer then went to the PT Ewindo distributor who was in Makassar and asked about the authenticity of the seed product. The seed authenticity check then continued to Ewindo’s head office in Purwakarta, West Java.

After conducting further research and checking and juxtaposing it with the original product of Ewindo’s Brand S, the Servo tomato seed packaging sent or sold by the perpetrator was proven to be fake and deliberately faked by the perpetrator with the intention of damaging the image of the Servo Brand which was widely known and proved successful in the community. farmers all over Indonesia

Armed with these findings, the Ewindo Legal Team immediately conducted a search and then reported the incident to the Police, the West Java Regional Police regarding the alleged occurrence of a criminal act of trademark infringement and/or also the circulation of counterfeit seeds which were not only detrimental to us as a seed producer company, but also very detrimental. farmers so that it must be investigated thoroughly to the roots.

“Including the makers and distributors so that no more victims are harmed. We do this as a form of our moral responsibility to the farmers,” said Ewindo’s Corporate Engagement Manager Freddy Reynaldo.

Furthermore, Freddy said, Ewindo really appreciates the police who have succeeded in uncovering criminal acts that have the potential to cause huge losses for farmers and also the Government’s food security program.

“In the future, we hope that farmers will no longer have to worry about using Servo brand seeds or other Cap Panah Merah seeds, because we have also made various efforts to prevent brand abuse and the circulation of fake seeds by using invisible ink in our packaging,” he added. Freddy.

As is known, seeds are very important and decisive variables in the success of cultivation carried out by farmers. The use of superior quality seeds that are original and certified as well as the use of appropriate cultivation technology are the keys to successful cultivation and increasing national agricultural productivity.

“We will continue to support and provide broad access to law enforcement officers to uncover this very detrimental crime of seed counterfeiting, which is also a form of our commitment to serve farmers and encourage the success of programs to increase agricultural productivity and national food security,” he concluded.
