The East Java Police’s Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation’s Unit I Sub-Directorate IV identified incidents of alleged conservation of natural resources and ecosystems crimes in the form of buying and selling protected animals in Tulungagung and Jember. Kombes Pol. Gatot Repli Handoko, the East Java Police’s Head of Public Relations, reported that his team had apprehended two individuals with the initials VRW (29) and SFSS (25).
The suspect VRW was arrested on Tuesday (5/10) at his residence, Dusun Sodo, RT. 01/RW. 01, Sodo Village, Pakel District, Tulungagung Regency, according to the head of public relations. The officers then carried out the plan and arrested SFSS in Glagahwero Village, Kalisat District, Jember Regency’s Dusun Krajan II RT. 08/RW. 07, Dusun Krajan II RT. 08/RW. 07, Dusun Krajan II RT. 08/RW. 07, Dusun Krajan II RT. 08/RW. 07, Dusun Krajan II
“The two suspects were arrested for breaking the legal grounds governing the live and dead trading of endangered animals,” said the Head of Humas at the East Java Police Headquarters in Surabaya on Wednesday (13/10/21).
AKBP Oki Ahadian, the Head of the East Java Police Ditreskrimsus’ Sub-Directorate for Certain Crimes, revealed that members first obtained information about the practice of buying and selling protected animals. The inquiry was then focused on a single VRW suspect, who was later apprehended in Tulungagung. It leads to other suspects in the Jember area based on the existing information and proof.
“The crew moved promptly, and the suspect was eventually apprehended. It was known that these two suspects frequently sold rare animals alive or dead after they were acquired, therefore it was deepened again “The Head of the Sub-Directorate for Specific Crimes stated.
The two suspects were both seeking for and buying rare animals over social media, according to the Head of the Sub-Directorate for Certain Crimes. The head of the Sub-Directorate for Certain Crimes stated that his team was still looking into the issue and promised to go after other people who were involved in the sale of protected animals.
“Because many of their networks are still suspicious,” said the Head of the Sub-Directorate for Certain Crimes.
The police were able to obtain some evidence as a result of this disclosure. Officers seized one mobile phone, two bankbooks, two Java Langurs alive, two Java Langurs dead, one Binturong alive, one Hornbill alive, and animal cargo packaging from the VRW suspects.
Meanwhile, the police seized two HP units, two savings accounts, six hornbill chicks, one Binturong, one hedgehog, one Musang Rase, three iron cages, and four plastic baskets from the hands of the suspect SFS.
Article 40 paragraph (2), as well as Article 21 paragraph (2) letters a, b, and d of Law Number 5 of 1990, concerning the Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and Their Ecosystems, will apply to the two accused. Five years in prison and a fine of IDR 100 million are the penalties.
